Strategy, Planning, & Litigating to Win by A S Drier is a great book about the strategy and tactics behind lawsuits. This is not a book for a casual reader and probably also isn’t a book for most lawyers either. I think you need to have at least a basic understanding of military theory before getting much substance out of it. I’m talking about Clausewitz, Sun Tzu, and Boyd at a minimum. Reading it while also looking up concepts on wikipedia may be another option for dedicated learner.

Because it’s a dense book, the writing can be difficult to get through but it’s worth it. This is not a book that you’ll read once and get everything out of it. You’ll need to read it again (which I haven’t done yet).

Growth is Dead: Now What? by Bruce MacEwan is a book about the history and future of the business of law. It covers where law came from and the outlook it has. While it’s primarily designed toward biglaw (meaning not your average criminal defense or personal injury lawfirm in town).

While the book is probably designed for biglaw attorneys only, it is also an important read for small law firms. Bruce compares lawfirms to other business entities and discusses how they relate. That same approach can be applied to small lawfirms, too.

Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard is an amazing book about the convergence of three times in history. It covers President Garfield (who was an amazing person that I want to learn more about), the state of germ theory in medicine and its changing, and Alexander Graham Bell (another amazing person I want to learn more about). The story itself has stoic philosophy, underdogs, and calm in the time of crisis. There’s a lot to be learned beyond the factual story here.

As for the writing itself, Millard wrote a phenomenal book and it is a page turner. It reads more like a novel, in that it’s a quick read, than a dry, fact-based non-fiction book.I read it very quickly.

I can’t say enough great things about it and I recommend it to many people.

I read Knight’s Cross by David Fraser. It’s a book about Erwin Rommel, a famous general who fought for Germany during World War 2.
